People say having a baby completely changes your life.. and it does! Not only does having that sweet bundle of joy turn everything upside down, it also makes you more cautious. For me, having my son made me cautious about everything, from the products I was using to clean my home, to the products I was putting on him. As mom, I am my family’s protector. Joining Young Living has helped me feel more confident about protecting my family. I am passionate about sharing that confidence with others!
I used to struggle with major sinus and allergy issues. I took Zyrtec daily but still had some flare ups. To my surprise while pregnant with Landon I didn’t have my normal sinus and allergy problems, I had plenty of other issues (heartburn, nausea – all day everyday, insomnia… ) the list could go on. I remember commenting many times to people that I hadn’t had my seasonal sinus infection and I had quit taking my Zyrtec, (I didn’t like taking any medicines I didn’t need to help with my pregnancy). It wasn’t until recently I realized that some other issues I had during my pregnancy played a major role in alleviating some of my sinus and allergy problems. I mentioned that I was nauseous all day every day, did I mention that smells made it even worse?!! I could not stand the smell of my favorite candles, air fresheners, perfumes, lotions or cleaning supplies. I was once a candle, wax melt and wallflower junkie! I cannot tell you the amount of money I spent at bath and body works before pregnancy, but during I couldn’t even walk past a store in the mall. We had to switch our laundry detergent and fabric softener to free and clear, I switched out what cleaning supplies I could to fragrance free. All the candles and wallflowers got put away in a closet, I quit wearing perfume and searched several stores to find unscented deodorant (yes, it was that bad!).
So what am I getting at??? Did you know……
Synthetic fragrances may be the most common type of chemical in your house? Air fresheners, plug-ins and scented candles can emit hundreds of harmful chemicals known to be carcinogens, respiratory and endocrine disrupters, and reproductive toxicants, even at low levels. Though they seem safe, regular scented candles are a huge source of indoor air pollution and they put off chemicals that are considered just as dangerous as second-hand smoke. Most candles are made of paraffin wax, which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned (both are known carcinogens). In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes. Paraffin is a petroleum waste product and has to be deodorized and chemically bleached before it can be made into wax. (source)
… Don’t feel bad, I didn’t know either! But now that I do, it is clear to me that eliminating those pollutants from my home made a huge difference in how I felt and how my sinuses felt!
Not to worry, you don’t have to live in a stinky, unscented house! There are safe, natural ways to freshen your home. Diffusing essential oils is a great alternative to candles. There are endless combinations and not only do they smell good, they also help support our body systems. Diffusing isn’t the only alternative to adding a fresh scent to your home, I mix up my own “febreze” with water, witch hazel and my favorite essential oil for a fresh, clean smell -purification (but you can use any essential oil). I spray this on my couch, dog beds, rugs, curtains, in stinky shoes, anywhere I would have normally sprayed febreze and even places I wouldn’t have sprayed febreze; like on my dogs themselves! Not only does purification smell good, it has so many other amazing benefits!
I could list many more ways I use essential oils to freshen my home but I will save those for another day…
