When I began my journey with essential oils I was at a point in my life where I felt like I’d tried it all in an effort to get healthy — the fad diets, supplements, exercise videos with famous gurus, spent hundreds of dollars on gym memberships and trainers, I went vegetarian for a while … really, I tried everything but I was still struggling with my weight, energy level, and I was sick all the time. It was depressing. Then a dear friend recommended that I try Young Living Oil to support my immune system. After a lot of hesitation (because I wasn’t interested in yet another new fad) I tried it and … I noticed that I was starting to feel better. I was invited to an essential oil party and thought I’d go see if there was something else that might help me. By half way through the party I knew it was the answer to prayer. I bought the Premium Starter Kit and my life changed in huge ways! Since I ordered that kit I have lost weight, improved my A1c, I sleep better, my energy is better, I feel like I think more clearly, and the list goes on! For me, essential oils went from being a fad to being a way of life. Now I teach people how to find what their body may need and I teach gut health and fermented food classes. What a difference an oily life makes! I love helping people define their health goals and discover which oils and oil-based supplements might just make all the difference in the world. Life is a journey … and my journey includes essential oils!

Why essential oils are part of my life every day

Thyroid and essential oils

Hypothyroidism – I’d never heard of it until I was given that diagnosis about 10 years ago and, upon researching it, I discovered that I’d likely had this problem since I was about 12 years old. Oh how different my life may have been if only I’d known then. When I was diagnosed, I was constantly exhausted, my hair was falling out, my skin was so dry that it hurt and did I mention I was exhausted? I began taking a prescription medication and I did feel better, but then the symptoms came back and my dose was increased. Then it was increased again, and again, and again. Every year my dose went up. So I researched it and discovered that the medication they prescribe it meant to treat the symptoms but not the thyroid itself! So, I decided to take control of my thyroid health and researched essential oils. With my doctor’s approval, I began using Endoflex essential oil on my thyroid every morning (just a drop or two on my throat/neck). After a month of using it, I developed a rash on my neck (near the area I applied the oil but not exactly on that spot). Then I found that I was feeling jumpy and had a harder time falling asleep. Then my heart began to flutter so I called the doctor right away. After a simple blood test, it was discovered that I was over-medicated for the thyroid which means that my thyroid was beginning to do something for itself! I discovered that the neck rash, insomnia, heart flutters, jumpiness, sensitivity to temperatures were all signs that my thyroid function had improved and my medication dose was too high. I’m still taking my prescription medication but at a lower dose and I pray my adrenal system will continue to improve so that my dose will decrease again.

I believe that the Lord created nature to work hand-in-hand with the function of our bodies. I’m learning every day how to support my body naturally so it will heal from years of being bombarded with chemicals. I’m not anti-prescription medication —  I’m thankful for prescription medication, and I believe the Lord influences the medical profession so that we can live longer healthier lives. But I also believe He intended for us to help ourselves whenever we can. That’s what I’m doing – and every day I pray for guidance so I’ll know what to use and what to avoid and I continue to trust in His healing. Sometimes He heals instantly, sometimes He heals in increments, and sometimes He heals by teaching us how to heal ourselves.

Oils and Kids

I was asked recently if children could use essential oil. The short answer is ABSOLUTELY … BUT we have to keep in mind that their skin is thinner and more sensitive so dilute dilute dilute. Young Living has an oil called V-6 that is great for diluting with kids. Remember to keep essential oils far away from their eyes and hands (so they don’t rub their eyes) and be aware of which oils are considered to be “hot” oils (oils that cause skin irritation for sensitive skin like peppermint, clove, Thieves, etc) because those will most likely need to be diluted with a carrier oil (like V6).

Respiratory Oils

Who knew!? Out of the blue, my seasonal allergies turned into severe allergy induced asthma. Yikes! I have been working for the last 10 months to improve my respiratory system and to educate myself on the healthy lifestyle changes I could make to help. What I discovered has amazed me. I thought asthma was a “lung” disease/disorder but it is actually an INFLAMMATORY disorder! Wow. It has taken a while but I think I’m finally making progress and Essential Oils have been a vital part of that progress. Supporting our body’s systems while our body does what it was designed to do is so important. Diffusing some, applying some more, ingesting some oils … but that was just the start. I’ve stopped consuming gluten, artificial sugar substitutes, carbonated beverages … and I’ve begun consuming lacto-fermented cabbage, homemade kombucha and lots and lots of filtered water. At long last, my 4-5 times daily breathing treatment is down to only once a day. Always remember … our bodies didn’t get sick overnight and they aren’t going to get better overnight either. Have patience with yourself. Pray for guidance and do your best. Changes sometimes happen one oily drop at a time.

Disease: The Big Fight

How can we support our bodies when our bodies are fighting a disease? There is a series of things we can do to strengthen our body’s ability to deal with the bombardment of diseases plaguing us today. I’m not a medical professional and I’m not telling you that these steps will cure or solve whatever it is you’re dealing with. But there are things that may support your body and they’re worth checking into, right?! When your body attacks, fight back!

  1. Young Living’s Ningxia Red juice! This is the most AMAZING antioxidant juice and there is absolutely no way you could get this many antioxidants into your diet through foods alone. Two little ounces a day is all it takes (although I know of other people dealing with major illnesses who drink more than that). Here is my favorite way to drink Ningxia Red:  A glass pint jar (always glass or steel – never EVER plastic), 2 ounces of Ningxia Red, 2 teaspoons Bragg ORGANIC apple cider vinegar, a couple of drops of orange essential oil or lemon essential oil, ice cubes and fill the rest of the jar with cold filtered water. Add a lid, stir or shake, drink (be sure to use either a steel or paper straw – NEVER plastic). Try it!!! Need an extra boost of energy? Add a serving of Ningxia Nitro!
  2. Our immune systems are under attack all day. Toxins in our environment, foods that contain antibiotics, even our deodorant, makeup and hair and body care products are filled with toxins that we slather on the largest organ of the human body – our skin. Dump the junk! Throw away the laundry soap and fabric softener (which is one of the most toxic substances in the home and our clothes are literally wiping toxins onto our skin all day) and switch to Young Living Thieves Laundry soap and organic wool dryer balls. It takes much less soap to clean a load of laundry so one bottle lasts a very long time and the wool dryer balls last … forever. Not sure if your brand of soap, lotion, etc., is toxic? Look on EWG.org, search for your brand and take a look. Beware – it can be REALLY scary!
  3. Young Living Frankincense essential oil. Seriously, one of the oils I refuse to run out of. I add it to my face lotion every day to support healthy skin. My mother began to dab it onto her face where she had skin cancer removed several times. Her dermatologist has been VERY pleased with her skin since she began this and he told her to keep doing it. I like to add it to a capsule and ingest daily to support overall wellness.
  4. Try your best to eat only organic produce, meat and eggs free from antibiotics, and unprocessed foods. Do everything you can to avoid sugar substitutes, carbs from processed foods like bread, pasta, crackers, etc. (the body converts these carbs to sugar which feeds diseases like cancer and inflammation – inflammation is linked to heart disease, asthma, etc). I know two people personally who cut out sugar and carbs and found that their psoriasis, acne, headaches, fatigue and depression either improved significantly or cleared up entirely. Its certainly worth finding out if you are one of those people who is extra sensitive to sugar and carbs.

There are many more things you can do, other essential oils you can incorporate into your daily life, that may support your body as you deal with illnesses. I love that my doctor supports my essential oil use in conjunction with some prescription medications as I strive to improve my health. Young Living has changed my life – and I’m never going back. 🙂

Protect your Skin

What’s the largest organ of the human body? OUR SKIN!!! Its never too late to start protecting it!

Did you know that most women apply over 80 toxins to their body before they even walk out the door in the morning? Did you know that it takes only 30 seconds for anything you apply to your skin to enter your blood stream?? Scary stuff! So many of the products we use everyday are LOADED with toxins. They’re in everything from shower soap to body lotion to deodorant and toothpaste. Then we put on our clothes and inadvertently slather our bodies all day and all night with the toxins in our laundry detergent and fabric softener.
