Hi! I’m Raychelle (sounds like “Rachel”). Health & wellness through a chemical-free lifestyle is my passion. After working in event marketing the tech industry for the last 10+ years, a series of events led me to staying at home full-time with my two young sons. I needed to break out of the routines of motherhood (there are NO routines in the event world!) and I stumbled upon the Whole30….a program that seemed challenging enough to break up the day-to-day 🙂
I didn’t think we were particularly unhealthy, but after eliminating all the processed foods from my diet and solely focusing on vegetables, fruit, quality protein, and healthy fats I discovered that my health (both physical & emotional) could be so much better! Essential oils fell into my lap shortly after completing my Whole30 reset. These adorable little bottles of natural goodness got me thinking…what if all the chemicals in my house are just as bad as the unpronounceable ingredients in processed foods?! Duh, right?
So, we’re on a journey to kick those chemicals to the curb. We don’t need ’em & neither do you! Contact me to learn more about easy ways you can take baby steps towards a chemical-free home!
2016, our first full year in California, brought a lot of changes. We left Austin in the fall of 2015 when my husband got a job in the Bay Area. We found an amazing rental in the hills of Oakland. I spent the first half of 2016 working at a startup in San Francisco. By July, my oldest son’s preschool closed, my grandmother (who was living with us and watching my younger son while I worked) had moved back to Texas, and I quit my job to take care of the boys full-time.
I struggled the first few months staying home with the boys. I had envisioned grand adventures that we would go on, exploring all the outdoor and cultural treasures the Bay Area has to offer. Of course, the reality was much different. Kids like routine. Kids like consistency. And adventures were a hard sell. I also didn’t know many people…ok make that anyone in Oakland. As someone who intentionally chose to work in events because no day was ever the same, I had a hard time adjusting to the routines of being at home with the boys. 2 months into this new “gig”, I needed a project, something challenging to focus on.
After seeing some posts about the Whole30 on Facebook and Instagram and having my aesthetician recommend it, I decided this diet would be the perfect way for me to challenge myself (giving up carbs, alcohol & sugar…ahh!!) and hopefully get me out of the funk I was feeling since moving to the Bay Area.
It was not easy: cutting out all added sugar (including honey, agave, maple syrup and artificial sweeteners), all grains (wheat, corn, rice…everything!), all alcohol, and instead focusing on eating good quality proteins, vegetables, and fruit. The first 20 days were awful. I hated it. But, that’s why I had done it…it was a challenge, something to push me out of my comfort zone…shake things up a bit. So I stuck with it. Somewhere around day 20 to 21, I didn’t feel as miserable. I was waking up feeling confident and ready to conquer the day. My husband took notice that I seemed happier, lighter.
I made it all the way through the 30 days! At the end my clothes fit better, I had more energy, and I was sleeping better (until then, I didn’t know that I was sleeping poorly!)
The next day, day 31, I flew back to Texas with the boys. It was an impromptu trip that I booked when I was about five days into the Whole30. At that time, I had a minor breakdown and all I wanted was my family…my family that was way back in Texas. I convinced my husband that I needed to book a trip back home and he didn’t protest when I booked the tickets. Now, on Day 31 the trip felt frivolous since I was over the mental/emotional breakdown that I had 25 days earlier. In fact, I was feeling great! But, the flight was booked, so the boys & I left my husband behind & we decided to make the most of it!
I was able to spend over a week in Texas visiting with family. One day, my sister, Kelli, invited me to a Young Living Essential Oils party put on by one of her friends & former colleagues, Nadine. I had heard of essential oils before and I was super skeptical of what they were, or rather claimed to be. But I was there with nothing in particular to do & I couldn’t argue with spending a couple hours hanging out with other adults away from the kiddos. I went and was pleasantly surprised…it was fun!
At the party, we used essential oils to make things like boo-boo spray, sinus roll-ons, and foaming hand soap. I heard stories from other attendees that there was a blend of oils called Thieves that was practically a miracle oil for helping your kids not get sick. And my mom & sister were raving about how great lavender was for helping kiddos go to sleep.
By then I was like, alright, alright, this sounds all well & good, but I know this is a MLM thing…let’s get to the catch. I one hundred percent did not want to become a network marketer. I didn’t want to be that person. I was assured that I wouldn’t have to sell anything, it’s just like a wholesale membership… a way for you to get wholesale price (a savings of 24%) on all of the products. Ok, I’m liking the sound of this.
Then, I saw that it was $160 to get the Premium Starter Kit. It came with 11 oils, a diffuser, two samples of Ningxia Red (an antioxidant juice that I had tried & loved at the party), and some materials/samples to help share Young Living with other people. Of course, I don’t have that kind of money to spend because despite my 24/7 work schedule, I don’t get a paycheck for being a stay at home mom. I knew I probably shouldn’t be spending money while I’m on this trip (a trip that cost money that I shouldn’t have been spending in the first place). But, I looked at the retail prices for everything that came in the kit and all of the stuff that you get in the kit. Suddenly $160 doesn’t seem like all that much. And the oils did smell really good…so at the very least, I’d have some new air fresheners to use. In fact I was getting pretty excited that I was snagging an awesome price for $300+ worth of goodies! I signed up and anxiously awaited my kit to arrive.
When my kit arrived, I took out one of the oil blends, Stress Away, and following the advice of my sister, put a couple drops on my neck & wrists. Then, I started diffusing lavender (…mmm smells like a spa!) and put a couple drops on the boys’ feet that night. I tried to use all 11 oils those first few days….I started diffusing Frankincense (he comes on strong at first, but oh man love him now!), putting Lemon Vitality in my water (better than a lemon slice!), and adding Purification inside our shoes (it eliminates the stink!). I was hooked.
I’ve pretty much always been a huge fan of burning candles and using wax melts. I tend to buy bleach cleaner with floral scent to use in the bathroom & when I make a big mess in the kitchen. I stocked our bathroom with shampoos & body washes in the scent du jour. So what?
Well, I had eliminated everything processed and artificial from my diet with the Whole30 and I felt so good afterwards. Now, I found these oils that are the essence of leaves, resins, petals, and bark. These oils smell so good & they have so many different uses…what artificial things in our home could be replaced with these oils? I don’t consider our family unhealthy or unwell…but what if we just don’t know that it could be better? I didn’t think my eating & sleeping habits were all that bad either…that is until I eliminated the artificial/highly processed foods from my diet during my Whole30.
So, here we are on the first day of 2017… and tomorrow I’m beginning my second Whole30. My intention is to continue to eliminate processed, artificial foods from my diet through the rest of the year. Along with that, I’m going to begin to replace the potentially toxic and artificial chemicals in our home, with products that are closer to nature and have benefits for our health and wellness. I’m still new to Young Living, but so far I’m loving the products and feel really good about what the company stands for.
Who knows if it’s spending so much time with crunchy Californians or it’s just the path I’m meant to travel…but this crunchy momma is excited for the journey to come. I’d love for you to follow along on this journey. And even more, I’d love for you to join me! If you are interested in checking out what Young Living has to offer, I’m your gal. The products are legit. These oils have changed and continue to change people’s lives. I won’t bombard you and hound you to buy…promise! I only want the very best for you this year and always!
Here’s to a whole and joyful 2017!
